Workflow
When working on a grade for a project, I start with clean color management – taking into account the source format and bringing that as cleanly as possible into the deliverable color space. It’s then important to balance the image and match each shot or camera from shot to shot, focusing on consistency.
I then have a personalized film emulation process, adding cinematic tonal qualities and organic texture like film grain, bloom, halation, etc. Finally, it’s important to bring out what the focus is of each individual shot with selective pop and power windows to draw the eye in the direction to tell the story.
Foresight
Having knowledge of post-production workflows while on set saved us massive time and money on this shoot. Not only were we able to confidently opt for a “Poor Man’s Process” approach, or shooting driving scenes in a stationary position instead of an expensive and potentially dangerous car rig, but I was also able to instruct the G&E crew that a smaller blue screen was all we needed – instead of a far larger, more expensive backdrop that would have reached behind every window.
